From Part-Time Officer to Chief of County Detectives
Mr. DeShields began his professional career as a part-time police officer in Atlantic City, New Jersey, serving in this role from 1978 to 1981. In 1982, he became a patrol officer with the Stockton Police Department, where he remained until 1984, when he joined the Department of Human Services Police Department. Just five years later, Mr. DeShields was appointed county investigator at the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office, and in 1998, he became the sergeant of county investigators.
In 2005, Mr. DeShields progressed to the role of lieutenant of county detectives for the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office. He served in this capacity until being appointed captain of county investigators and commander of the Litigation Division and Crisis Negotiations Unit in 2014. In 2019, Mr. DeShields reached the rank of chief of county detectives for Atlantic County and Mays Landing, New Jersey. In this role, he oversaw the day-to-day operations of the agency, met with police chiefs to ensure protocol compliance and reviewed internal affairs.
Academic Pursuits
Mr. DeShields received a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Stockton University in 2006 and a Master of Public Administration from the University of Phoenix in 2018. To complement his formal education, he has received certifications from the Burlington Police Academy, the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General and the New Jersey State Police Homicide School.
Founding Superior Security Consultants LLC
In 2023, Mr. DeShields retired from the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office to co-found Superior Security Consultants LLC. Today, he leverages his years of experience in law enforcement to support businesses, evaluating their security needs and safeguarding their resources to propel growth. Awards, Accolades and Civic Involvement
For his numerous contributions to law enforcement and security, Mr. DeShields has been recognized with several awards and accolades. He has received outstanding service and achievement awards from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the New Jersey Police Benevolent Association, the Muslim American Law Enforcement Association and the Atlantic Police Foundation. Additionally, he received a medal of valor from the New Jersey State Chiefs. Mr. DeShields attributes his success to his father, who instilled the value of hard work and the initiative to never waste an opportunity.
Mr. DeShields is the vice president of the executive board for the New Jersey chapter of NOBLE. In addition, he is a member of numerous associations, including the Atlantic County Chiefs of Police Association, the International Association of Homicide Investigators, the New Jersey chapter of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives and the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police. He is also past two-term president for the Chiefs of County Detectives / Investigators Association of New Jersey.
Plans for the Future
Moving forward, Mr. DeShields is determined to continue supporting the justice system in his role as a security consultant. Although he has suffered a stroke, he is never deterred by setbacks. He is working hard to rebuild himself and plans to return to his work with even greater resolve and dedication.
