Risk Specialty Group releases its 2026 Playbook, offering updated risk management strategies and services for architects and engineers facing complex professional liability challenges, with most clients saving 10-20 percent on insurance.

-- HOUSTON, TX — Risk Specialty Group, a Houston-based commercial insurance brokerage serving design professionals in six states, has published a 2026 risk management playbook for architecture, engineering, surveying, and construction management firms confronting AI policy exclusions, rising cyber exposure, and tighter insurance renewals.

The guide arrives as underwriters reshape terms for the design professions. According to the brokerage, carriers are requesting longer claims histories, AI-tool disclosures, cyber-control attestations, and named subconsultant lists before quoting — and an organized renewal submission can be the difference between a 5% premium increase and a 25% one. Appetite has pulled back most sharply for structural, geotechnical, and surveying disciplines.

The playbook organizes a design firm's exposure into six connected categories: professional liability, contractual exposure, cyber and data, operational liability, subconsultant risk, and regulatory and licensure. The firm's brokers report that most claims land not in the headline coverage but in the gap next to it — an un-redlined indemnity clause, a missing cyber policy, or a commercial auto policy that does not match how field crews actually drive. Two shifts receive particular attention. First, AI has entered the deliverable workflow at most firms — including drafting support, code checking, clash detection, and energy modeling — while many professional liability policies have not kept pace. Some carriers have added exclusions for purely AI-generated work; others offer affirmative coverage with restrictions. The Verisk AI exclusion, as noted in the guide, has begun appearing on renewal endorsements. Second, cyber has moved from an IT concern to a project-delivery concern: the most common cyber claim against a design firm is wire-transfer fraud from a spoofed email, an event neither general liability nor professional liability typically covers.

"The firms renewing on the best terms in 2026 are the ones treating contracts, coverage, documentation, and technology as one system. When one of those pieces is missing, that is where the claim lands," said Travis Landers, ARM, president of Risk Specialty Group.

The guide also details a claims-response sequence for the first 24 hours after a claim, noting that late notice remains the most common reason coverage gets challenged on claims-made professional liability policies. Risk Specialty Group expects renewal scrutiny to continue to tighten through 2026 and recommends that design firms begin renewal preparation 60 to 90 days out, with quarterly one-hour reviews of a single risk component at a time.
