The dramatic space transformation outdated district office space into a vibrant learning environment in a 100-year-old building. It fits perfectly into the district's vision to leverage hands-on, project-based learning serving their PreK through 5th-grade students. "We want our young learners to experience STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics) in a stimulating, non-traditional environment.
We also want to introduce our students to early career exploration, so that they can grow up in a world of possibilities," according to Dr. Anitia Rice, Superintendent of Lincoln Elementary School District 156. "We had this old space, and our administrative team, school board members, and teachers saw this as a great opportunity to reinvent what school spaces can look like," concluded Dr. Rice.
As students, parents, and community members experienced the ribbon-cutting ceremony and walked through the Innovation Center on Back-to-School night, there was a sense of wonder, and a genuine excitement.
The Innovation Center was designed in conjunction with Inventionland Education, which works with schools and districts throughout North America to reimagine spaces in both existing schools and new construction. Its award-winning design is often featured in industry-leading publications, as well as the television show, Tomorrow's World Today, that airs on the Science and Discovery Channels.
"Education is changing, and student engagement is more important than ever," according to Founder George Davison. "We're inspired every day by the transformations we help facilitate, and working with the Lincoln Elementary School District 156 and their stakeholders was one of the highlights of our summer."
